October 2016 at Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club

Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club held two meetings in October and welcomed seven new members! Several of our newcomers have now already made a short three minute ‘icebreaker’ speech on a subject of their choice and received constructive, supportive feedback from other club members. More of these mini speeches are planned for November and we look forward to all our new members making their full-length ‘maiden’ speech (6 – 8 minutes) in early 2017.
Sutton Coldfield Speakers’ Club is affiliated to the national Association of Speakers’ Clubs and all new members receive a manual produced by the ASC. The manual includes ten assignments designed to cover all aspects of public speaking, such as speech construction, use of notes, use of humour and much more.
The optional theme for the second of our October meetings was ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ and during the evening we heard about the consequences of lying to a teacher, honesty in regard to people in the public eye, whether or not it is good to have the question ‘Does my bum look big in this?’ answered honestly plus much more. Part of the joy of attending Speakers’ Club is the range of different subjects chosen by the evening’s speakers. We have only three topics that shouldn’t be mentioned – politics, religion and sex.
In December we have our annual dinner to look forward to plus a club competition evening. Lots of things for us all to get involved with!
